Finally things are moving. Antitrust enforcers just cracked down on giant poultry processors stealing from workers and farmers in the chicken industry. And more is coming.
Great stuff, Matt, thanks for the piece. A description of the poultry market roll-up would make a wonderful civics lesson for young and old students alike. Greed and power and domination make intriguing stories as well.
$85 million is chicken feed -- and it appears no admission of guilt. Unless more actions are forthcoming, this is pitiful and will do little to reduce monopoly power in the industry.
I would be curious as to how this might affect the chickens - would the issue of factory farms enter the picture - and how they might be favored or disfavored by the resolution of this issue - would "efficiency" and "productivity" suffer if the chickens were treated better ....
Workers in the chicken industry don't go to Democratic fundraisers, thanks for covering this. I'm posting because I'm helping out on a campaign that could bring a Antitrust believer to the US Senate. Today we got the endorsement of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch https://www.stltoday.com/opinion/editorial/editorial-we-recommend-lucas-kunce-in-missouri-democratic-primary-for-u-s-senate/article_43278f0e-86dc-5eaa-ae83-0505543a82c3.html PLEASE bug your friends in Missouri to vote for Lucas Kunce.
Excellent summary of a significant problem previously unidentified
