If you drag a message from any of the tabs to any other tab, Gmail will ask you if you want that to be the default for future messages from that sender. Click Yes, and the algorithm is defeated, as long as the sender does not change email list provider

I have a filter so everything from substack goes to my social tab, but I much prefer the website version of everything anyways so use rss.

This is one of many reasons I barely use Gmail. I got so sick of them forcing things a certain way, the way *they* feel it should be, instead of letting me have control over my own mail. At one point, I founds lots of messages I hadn't seen in my inbox buried in these tabs/categories. Even if they can be disabled or you can teach them, it should *never* have been set up to default to them. And these are the types of problems across all of Google's various services which, again, is one of many reasons I use them as little as possible.

I have been using gmail for years and didn't even look to see these tabs. I just checked and everything in all the tabs were also in my inbox, and there were thousands. so it hasn't been and issue for me. I do create my own tabs but I move thing to them myself.

Doesn't all this depend on if the gmail user actually uses Categories? Disclaimer: I utterly loathe gmail, but use it for an organization and for email that I don't want in my personal email system. But I've never paid attention to the Categories. I just looked at my gmail account and opened Categories to find: Social, Updates, Forums, Promotions. There were a few items in Social, but they are also in my general inbox. Nothing in updates or forums and 1 thing in promotions, and that item was also in my general inbox. So I sort of don't get what the issue is.

Great post Matt, I knew this was an issue but the scope was definitely news to me. One of the new things Gmail has been doing is prompting me to unsubscribe from certain stuff I haven't opened in a month - after reading this, if I had to guess it's businesses/groups who are being targeted as potential buyers for said promotional spots.
